Shards

The future of tiles is circular

Sustainability is very important to us. This is why our tiles do not contain any primary raw materials. With shards, we offer a resource-friendly alternative to conventional tiles.

Conventional tiles are usually made of clay, stone, glass or cement. However, the extraction of the corresponding primary raw materials is always associated with high environmental impacts. Shards tiles, on the other hand, are made from industrial and construction waste such as bricks, tiles and ceramics.

We, therefore, transform waste that would normally end up in landfills or road construction into a high-quality product. This saves natural resources and contributes to the development of a circular economy in the construction industry. We do not use dyes to produce shards tiles. The wide range of colors and haptics is created solely through the selection and processing of the materials used. Shards tiles are also circular. If they break, they can be fully reintegrated into the production of new tiles.

Our production does not need fossil fuels and is powered exclusively by electricity from renewable energy sources. In addition to saving large quantities of primary raw materials, this also allows us to save immense amounts of fossil gas, CO2 emissions and water.

By choosing shards tiles, our customers can reduce the ecological footprint of their construction projects. At the same time, they acquire a product that offers a special natural aesthetic. With its rich range of colors and textures, our tiles offer plenty of design freedom. No two tiles are exactly alike.

Shards has already received a number of awards. These include the Green Start-Up funding from the German Environmental Foundation, the German Sustainability Award for Design, the North Rhine Westphalian (NRW) Efficiency Award, the Recycling Design Award and the German Ecodesign Award. The state North Rhine Westphalia and the European Union are currently subsidizing our production setup with the Green Start-Up NRW Grant. At the same time, the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is supporting our project with a Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM). Together with our research partners, we are developing a continuous counter-rotating kiln. Compared to conventional roller kilns, the energy input is purely electric, and the special design of the kiln makes it particularly energy-efficient.

“Shards is a lighthouse product that we urgently need for the green building revolution.” Vanja Schneider (Managing Director of Moringa GmbH)
